Orange Blossom CARpet

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

How can art become a mechanism for community activation, engaging the curious, the urban dweller, tourists, and art lovers alike ?

Orange Blossom CARpet celebrates the “More Park, Less Way” initiatives for The Benjamin Franklin Parkway by merging landscape and automobiles, into a fun, vibrant and lush moment. The centerpiece is a brightly painted car, strategically placed in Maja Park. This eye-catching installation serves as a focal point, drawing people in and sparking curiosity. Parked in the open lawn space, the car appears to leave a trail of orange flowers behind it, creating a vibrant image and unforgettable landscape.

Orange is seen as a symbol of optimism, happiness and youthful connections. By incorporating elements of history, contemporary art, and community engagement, this project aims to foster a sense of connection among residents and visitors alike. Visitors and coordinated community groups are invited to contribute to the installation during an event celebrating Art on The Parkway. By adding orange flowers to the trail, a collaborative art piece will be created. At the end of the program, we envision having a donation of blossoms to neighbors and passersby to spread the Orange Blossom theme across the community.

The mix of the mechanical, aerodynamic, and organic creates a striking visual contrast, drawing attention to themes of nature's resilience and the impact of human innovation on the environment. The car becomes a unique container for artistic expression, with a mix of artificial plant selections to complement the vehicle's design and convey a sense of playfulness and fun for the late summer occasion.
